Living in the Chicago-land area means expecting the unexpected at all times. Snowstorm in April? It’s happened. The Cubs winning the World Series after almost a hundred years? Yes, that happened too. Since everything in our area is unpredictable, the best thing to do is stay prepared for the worst-case scenario. Having a Winter Car Kit is the best way to have peace of mind and ensure you are ready for anything.

Ice Scraper

Ice can form in a short amount of time, so you’ll want to ensure you have a quality scraper ready at all times. Be cautious of purchasing cheap plastic scrapers because they can break easily in freezing temperatures. Always have an ice scraper handy in your car because you never know when you will need to clear your windshield.

Blanket or Sleeping Bag

Waiting for a tow truck without heat in your car could be very dangerous. Frostbite can set in within minutes depending on how low the temperatures are. Having an extra set of warm clothing (jacket, scarf, hat, etc) and a blanket could be life-saving because you never know how long you might be waiting for assistance.

Kitty Litter

It sounds strange, but kitty litter can be used to help your tires gain traction. If you find yourself stuck in the snow, you can try spreading kitty litter around your tires to help them gain traction.

Flashlight

You never know when you’ll need light when you’re working on your car in the dark or figuring out your surroundings. Make sure to keep an extra set of batteries around just in case.

Jumper Cables

Don’t assume that other drivers will have cables when you need a start. Also, make sure you know how to use them!

Snacks

Keep a few snacks that don’t expire quickly, such as granola bars. You can also keep bottled water stored in your car for up to six months.

There are lots of other things you may want to add to your winter kit like a first aid kit, tire patch kit, shovel or safety vest. We hope you won’t need to use the items in your kit, but just in case you do, you’ll be prepared for anything. Always remember to keep your car filled with more gas than you need and stay up to date on your car’s maintenance.
