Little Bluestem Grass

Description:

‘Overdam’ Calamagrostis acutiflora, Variegated Feather Reed Grass

Description:
A beautiful grass forming a sturdy narrow column of deep green blades with creamy-white variegation. The pink blushed feathery flower heads begin in early summer fading to blonde as the season progresses. Flower stalks rise about one foot above the foliage to a total height of around 5 ft. tall. Prefers a cool situation and some shade where summers are hot.

Pancium virgatum 'Heavy Metal', Heavy Metal Switch Grass

Description:
'Heavy Metal' is a switch grass cultivar which features metallic-blue foliage and a columnar form. It is a clump-forming, warm season grass which typically grows in an upright, vertical clump to 3' tall. Stems typically retain vertical form without flopping throughout the growing season and into winter. Features metallic-blue leaves which turn yellow in autumn, fading to tan-beige in winter. Foliage clump is topped in mid-summer by finely-textured, pink-tinged, branched flower panicles which hover over the foliage like an airy cloud.

Panicum virgatum 'Shenandoah', Red Switch Grass

Description:
The brightest red Panicum by a long shot. Experienced horticulturalists have mistaken it for Imperata at first glance. It colors up by June and the flowers are also red. The shortest of the group and also the slowest grower, perhaps due in part to its lack of chlorophyll. This will probably be the most popular Switchgrass ever Nothing comes close to the fall color displayed by this grass!

Deschampsia caespitosa, Tufted Hair Grass

Description:
Tufted hair grass is clump-forming, cool season grass which is often grown as an ornamental. It typically forms a low, dense tussock (to 16" tall) of very thin (1/5" wide), arching, flat to inrolled, dark green grass blades (to 2' long). Numerous flower stems rise in summer from the foliage mound to a height of 3' bearing wide, airy panicles (to 20" long) of tiny, variably-colored flowers (tones of gold, silver, purple and green) which form a cloud over the foliage that is particularly attractive when backlit. Flower panicles turn yellowish-tan after bloom as the seed ripens and may remain attractive through much of the winter.

Miscanthus sinensis , Japanese Silver Grass

Description:
Ornamental grasses surpass all other plants for their luminous qualities in the garden. And Japanese silver grass is one of the best. It has beautiful arching blades that are topped with silvery plumes growing 3 to 6 feet tall. The plant’s coarse textured, dark green leaf blades are highlighted with creamy, white stripes. From late August onward the plant produces white, pinkish or reddish colored plumes that turn a silvery white as they dry.
