2009/2010 Snow Season Recap

04 December 2009:

NORTH REGION- There were snow flurries throughout the day 12/3/09 with little to no accumulation. After 3:00 a.m.12/4 a stronger band of snow came through and snow accumulated .5-1 inch within 30 minutes. A zero tolerance operation was started at 4:30 a.m. for all pre-approved accounts. Operations were complete by 9:30 a.m.

NORTH REGION Light snow began to fall around 3:00 a.m. covering the ground with a light layer of snow. A de-icing operation was started at 4:00 a.m. for all pre- approved sites and was completed by 9:00 a.m.

CENTRAL REGION Light snow began to fall around 3:00 a.m. covering the ground with a light layer of snow. A de-icing operation was started at 4:00 a.m. for all pre- approved sites and was completed by 9:00 a.m.

SOUTH REGION Light snow began to fall around 3:00 a.m. covering the ground with a light layer of snow. A de-icing operation was started at 4:00 a.m. for all pre- approved sites and was completed by 9:00 a.m.


08 December 2009:

NORTH REGION Snow began to fall around 3:00 putting a coating of snow on the ground. A de-icing operation began at 4:00 for all pre-approved sites. Snow continued to fall through the day, but the air and ground temperatures had warmed up throughout the day and there were no further snow accumulations.

CENTRAL REGION Snow began to fall around 3:00 putting a coating of snow on the ground. A de-icing operation began at 4:00 for all pre-approved sites. SOUTH REGION Snow began to fall around 3:00 putting a coating of snow on the ground. A de-icing operation began at 4:00 for all pre-approved sites. 09 December 2009:

NORTH REGION Snow fell throughout the day into the evening accumulating .25” to.50”. At 1 pm. all sites were rechecked. Some sites met the contract threshold and were plowed. Sites that had already been plowed earlier were also rechecked for cleanup needs. . During this time commercial sites were cleaned and de-icing was applied as needed. The temperatures began to fall late afternoon causing any moisture on the ground to freeze. In addition the wind began to blow the snow around making for dangerous travel and drifting of snow.

CENTRAL REGION Snow fell throughout the day into the evening accumulating .25” to.50. It was determined that approximately 50% of this regions sites that did not get plowed earlier, would require them to get plowed as contract thresh holds were met. Some sites that were plowed earlier would require an additional cleaning. Plow operations started at 1:00 pm and were finished at or about 8:00 pm. At the same time as the sites were being plowed a de-icing application was completed on all authorized sites Commercial sites were plowed and de-icing applications were done as needed. The temperatures began to fall in the late afternoon hours as well which began to freeze the moisture on the ground. In addition the wind began to blow the snow around making for dangerous travel and drifting of snow.

SOUTH REGION Lt Snow continued to fall through out the day laying down a blanket of snow accumulating an additional .25-.50” of snow. Contract thresh holds were not met on 95% of the residential sites, but clean up and plowing was done on some properties that authorized the out of contract operation. In addition, all authorized de-icing approvals were completed. All operations were complete at or around 8 p.m.


10 December 2009:

NORTH REGION Snow continued to fall from the previous day. Overnight the snow intensified and temperatures began to fall slightly below freezing. Around 10:00 p.m. snow had accumulated 2-4 inches. Closer to Lake Michigan at and around I-294 east, snow did not stick to the pavement. Sites were measured at 11:00 p.m. Sites east of I-294 did not require plowing. 90% of the region required plow operations which began around 1:00 a.m. All Commercial sites and pre-approved de-icing sites were plowed first and de-icing was applied after. All snow operations were complete around 9:00 a.m. Light snow continued to fall on and off throughout the day.

CENTRAL REGION Snow continued to fall from the previous day mixing in with rain and sleet. Overnight the snow intensified and temperatures fell slightly below freezing. Around 10:00 p.m. snow had accumulated 1-4 inches. Closer to Lake Michigan at and around I-294 east, snow did not stick to the pavement. Sites were measured at 11:00 p.m. Sites east of I-294 did not require plowing. Approximately 50% of this region did require plowing and operations were started at 2:00 a.m. All Commercial sites and pre-approved de-icing sites were plowed first and de-icing applied after. All snow operations were completed around 10:00 a.m. Snow continued to fall off and on throughout the day.

SOUTH REGION Snow continued to fall from the previous day mixing with rain and sleet and eventually becoming mostly all rain. At 11:00 p.m. sites were measured. The western (Dekalb) part of the region started a plow operation at 3:00 a.m. All pre-approved sites either had a plow and then de-icing or just de-icing according to conditions. Most sites had 1 inch or less and plow operations were not required.


12 December 2009:

NORTH REGION A Winter Weather Advisory was issues at 6 p.m. for freezing rain. At 7 p.m. a de-icing operation was done and completed by 12:00 p.m. Although freezing had not occurred yet at the time of the operation – all approved sites were pre-salted in anticipation of the icey conditions. per the Advisory.

CENTRAL REGION A Winter Weather Advisory was issues at 6 p.m. for freezing rain. West and North areas of this region did have icey conditions. A de-icing operation was done for these sites only. The operation started at 4:00 a.m. and was completed by 8:00 a.m.


15 December 2009:

NORTH REGION- Monday’s temperatures warmed up to the upper 30’s to lower 40’s causing melting of the snow piles from previous plowings. Crews were sent to pre-approved sites to spot check for freeze back and slippery conditions and to apply de-icing material as needed. The operation began at 6:30 a.m. and was completed by 9:00 a.m.

CENTRAL REGION- Monday’s temperatures warmed up to the upper 30’s to lower 40’s causing melting of the snow piles from previous plowings. Crews were sent to pre-approved sites to spot check for freeze back and slippery conditions and to apply de-icing material as needed. The operation began at 6:30 a.m. and was completed by 9:00 a.m.

18 December 2009:

NORTH REGION Light snow began around 8:00 a.m. with a sporadic dusting of snow. A de-icing operation was done for only the sites with snow. Snow melted on contact for most sites due to pavement temperatures. During the evening hours the ground temperature fell and a de-icing operation was done on all sites not done earlier. This second operation began at 3:00 p.m. and was complete by 7:00 p.m.

CENTRAL REGION- Light now began to fall around 8:00 a.m. producing a dusting of snow on the ground to the entire region. Due to the heavier snow bands in this region a pre-approved de-icing operation was done for all sites. The operation started at 9:00 a.m. and was complete by 1:00 p.m.

SOUTH REGION – Precipitation in this region was light and snow operations were not required.


19 December 2009:

NORTH REGION Snow overnight produced 1 inch to 2 inches of accumulation.. First plow operations started at 4:30 a.m. for accounts meeting the contract threshold. ( about 30% of accounts) By 6:00 a.m an additional accumulation of snow had fallen and plow operations were started for those accounts that had not met the contracted threshold earlier. About 10% of accounts still did not meet the contract threshold and no operations were necessary. Commercial accounts, 1 inch threshold accounts and all pre-authorized de-icing properties were started at 2:00 a.m and completed around 8:00 a.m. All plow operations started throughout the day as thresholds were met and were completed around 3:00 p.m.

CENTRAL REGION Snow overnight produced 1 inch to 2 inches of accumulation. Approximately 80% of properties achieved the 2 inch contract threshold and plow operations began between 6:00 a.m. and 6:30 a.m. Commercial accounts, 1 inch threshold accounts and all pre-authorized de-icing properties were started at 2:00 a.m and completed around 8:00 a.m. All plow operations started throughout the day as thresholds were met and were completed around 3:00 p.m.

SOUTH REGION Snow overnight produced .25” to about 1” of light snow throughout the region. All 1” accounts and pre-approved de-icing properties were started by 2:00 a.m and completed by 9:00 a.m.. Light snow continued throughout the morning in the north side of this region and plow operations were conducted for all accounts that met the 2 inch threshold. All operations were completed around 3 p.m. to 4 p.m.


22 December 2009:

NORTH REGION- Light snow began around 1:00 a.m. and a zero tolerance operation was started at 3:00 a.m. Snow continued to fall and at 8:30 a.m. 2 inches of snow was on the ground. Plow operations started at 11:00 a.m and completed between 5-6 p.m. Light snow continued to fall throughout the day with an additional .25 inches of snow or less. Temperatures held at between 29-32 degrees throughout the event.

CENTRAL REGION- Light snow began around 1:00 a.m. and a zero tolerance operation was started at 3:00 a.m. At that time snow had accumulated .5 to .75 inches. Snow continued to fall and at 8:30 a.m. 2 inches of snow was on the ground. Plow operations started at 10:00 a.m and completed between 4-5 p.m. Light snow continued to fall throughout the day with an additional .25 inches of snow or less. Temperatures held at between 29-32 degrees throughout the event.

Snow continued to fall and at 6:30 a.m. 2 inches of snow was on the ground. 23 December 2009: (Morning)

NORTH REGION- Freezing drizzle and light snow overnight resulted in a light blanket of snow with a layer of freezing drizzle. Pre-authorized de-icing operations were started at 3:00 a.m. In addition, a snow cleanup was completed at commercial sites from the previous snow.

CENTRAL REGION- Freezing drizzle and light snow overnight resulted in a light blanket of snow with a layer of freezing drizzle. Pre-authorized de-icing operations were started at 3:00 a.m. In addition, a snow cleanup was completed at commercial sites from the previous snow.

23 December 2009: (Evening)

NORTH REGION- Light snow continued to fall throughout the day with little to no accumulation. With the threat of ice, salt trucks and sidewalk personal were dispatched to sites at 1:00 p.m. Snow increased in intensity and accumulated to 1 inch before changing to freezing rain at around 5:30 p.m. Zero tolerance operations began and continued throughout the evening and early morning hours of 12/24/2009. Properties that requested multiple de-icing applications were started again at 8:00 p.m. This kept the amount of ice down, but did not completely melt the ice away.

CENTRAL REGION- Light snow continued to fall throughout the day with little to no accumulation. With the threat of ice Salt trucks and sidewalk personal were dispatched to sites at 1:00 p.m. Snow increased in intensity and accumulated to 1 inch before changing to freezing rain at around 5:00 p.m. Zero tolerance operations began and continued throughout the evening and early morning hours of 12/24/2009. Properties that requested multiple de-icing applications were started again at 8:00 p.m. This kept the amount of ice down, but did not completely melt the ice away.

SOUTH REGION- Rain and freezing rain began around 11:00 a.m. resulting in wet surfaces. These surfaces became slippery and de-icing application was started at 3:30 p.m. and continued throughout the evening until around 9:00 p.m. Freezing rain continued throughout the night and into the following morning. Properties that requested multiple de-icing applications were started again at 8:00 p.m. This kept the amount of ice down, but did not completely melt the ice away.


24 December 2009:

Pre-approved sites were maintained continuously throughout the day. A second de-icing program for all pre-approved sites was started between 1 and 2:00 a.m. and was completed between 6 and 7 a.m. Customers calling requesting ice removal using plows and shovels were handled throughout the day has the authorizations were approved. All operations were completed by 6 to 7 p.m.

NORTH REGION- Light snow began falling Thursday evening starting around 3-5:00 p.m. laying down a dusting of snow. A pre-approved de-icing application was started at 2:00a.m.

CENTRAL REGION- Light snow began falling Thursday evening starting around 3-5:00 p.m. laying down a dusting of snow. A pre-approved de-icing application was started at 2:00 a.m.

SOUTH REGION- Light snow began falling Thursday evening starting around 3-5:00 p.m. laying down a dusting of snow. A pre-approved de-icing application was started at 2:00am


26 December 2009: (Afternoon)

NORTH REGION- Light snow began to fall overnight continuing into the morning. The snow intensity began to increase by 6:00 to 7:00 a.m. with about 1 inch of snow on the ground. Pre-approved zero tolerance sites were maintained throughout the snow event. At 10:00 a.m. snowfall had reached 3 inches in all but the eastern portion of the region with lesser amounts. Due to the continuing snow, a plow operation was scheduled to start at 2:00 p.m. With forecasts continuing to change throughout the day a winter storm warning was issued and snowfall predictions had gone up to 5 to 10 inches for this snow event. Snow tapered off to flurries around 9:00 p.m. First round of plowing was completed between 8:00 and 9:00 p.m. A 1 hour break was given to crews and then a second pass was completed by 3:00 a.m. Commercial sites were started at 11:00 p.m. and completed by 4-5a.m. Snow amounts in this region varied from 4 inches to 14 inches.

NORTH REGION Light snow began to fall between 8-9:00 a.m. A light layer of snow covered the ground and a de-icing operation was started at 10:30 a.m. for all pre-approved sites. Snow continued to fall until noon. Total accumulation of snow was about .25 inches.

Snow continued to fall until noon. Total accumulation of snow was about .25 inches in the north section of this region to as much as .5 to 1 inch at the south side of the region.


28 December 2009:

NORTH REGION- Snow fell Sunday morning. With additional flurries predicted throughout the day a second de-icing operation was started at 2:00 a.m. and completed by 7:00 a.m. for all pre- approved sites.

31 December 2009:

NORTH REGION- Very light snow fell in the area starting on 12/30 and into the morning hours of 12/31/09. With salt residue on the pavement from previous treatments and the light condition of the snow, pre-approved de-icing operation was not started until 2:00 a.m. and was completed around 8:00 a.m. Temperatures’ throughout the day stayed around 35 degrees keeping the pavement from freezing. Total snow accumulation was a dusting to an inch.

NORTH REGION Lake affect snow began Thursday at 10:00 p.m. putting a 2 inch coat of snow by 11:15 p.m. An additional 2 inches had fallen by 12:15 a.m. Friday morning. Lake affect snow was shifting to the south by 3:30 and a plow operation was started at 2:30 a.m. All commercial and residential plow operations were completed by 11:30 a.m.

CENTRAL REGION Lake affect snow began Thursday at 10:00 p.m. putting a 2 inch coat of snow by 11:15 p.m. An additional 2 inches had fallen by 12:15 a.m. Friday morning. Lake affect snow was shifting to the south by 3:30 and a plow operation was started at 2:30 a.m. All commercial and residential plow operations were completed by 11:30 a.m.

SOUTH REGION Lake affect snow began at 12:00 a.m.. with 1 to 2 inches of accumulation by 1:35 a.m. An additional 1 to 2 inches fell be 3:15 a.m. Friday morning. Lake affect snow was shifting further south by 7:30 a.m. Plow operations were started at 5:00 a.m. and all commercial and residential sites were completed by 2:00 p.m.

NORTH REGION-A pre-approved de-icing application was scheduled to check sites for potential ice conditions. Temperatures were very cold and there was potential for areas that did not melt 100% refreeze over night.

11 January 2010:

NORTH REGION Due to blowing and drifting snow over night, skeleton crews were sent out to check all pre-approved sites. Drift control and de-icing operations started at 6:30 a.m.

12 January 2010:

NORTH REGION No operations were necessary in this region

CENTRAL REGION -Due to lake effect snow creating just a dusting of snow, a de-icing application was done in the just the eat region of this region (THOMAS AREA).The de-icing application started at 4:00am. Due to lake effect snow creating a dusting of snow, a de-icing operation was started at 4:00 a.m. for the eastern portion of the central region ( Tomas area)

SOUTH REGION No operations were necessary in this region


14 January 2010:

NORTH REGION Skeleton crews were sent out to check sites at 6:30 a.m. to check for possible freeze back from melting snow. Conditions did not warrant a de-icing application at this time.

NORTH REGION Light rain began in the early afternoon. Ground temperatures were below freezing causing the potential for slippery conditions. A de-icing operation started at 3:00 p.m. on all pre-approved sites.

21 January 2010:

NORTH REGION No weather conditions in this region. Snow operations were not necessary.

CENTRAL REGION This region experienced more moisture than the north region. Ice was accumulating on the ground from the previous application along with the current moisture.
