Dear Ms. Caruso,
My husband and I are Thornwood residents, living on the lake by the Sports Core. In the past 2 weeks, we noticed the swans on the lake building a nest in the grasses and cattails abutting our back yard. There was another protected habitat at the other end of the lake, but Mama and Papa Swan decided to build here instead. I contacted Kim and Laura at your management office with my concerns about the safety of the swan family, wondering if someone could be building an anti-coyote fence. I was also concerned about the mowing of common areas disturbing the swans. You can probably access the fax I sent to them on April 30th to get the details of my concerns. Anyway, the purpose of this letter is to let you know that the swan dilemma has been solved very quickly. Through Kim and Laura, I was contacted that morning by Mr. Bob Knox of the Knox Swan and Dog LLC. He said he was on his way over to the lake with his Home Depot purchases of protective fencing. Hooray! He got here and, after putting on his waders, he immediately erected the fencing, keeping the swans safe from coyotes. At about the same time, Mr. Jim Benecke from Acres Group (the landscaping company) came over to the location behind my yard and consulted with his colleague and with Mr. Knox. Mr. Benecke then let me know what his landscapers would do to assure the swan’s safety. Hooray again!
I applaud the efforts of Kim, Laura, Mr. Knox, and Mr. Benecke. I have been raving about the events of the past week to the neighbors of Thornwood, and I felt you need to know the GOOD things that happen – not just complaints from Thornwood residents! To let you know “the rest of the story”, Mama has 6 eggs in the nest now (according to Mr. Knox), and as of yesterday (May 3rd), she has begun to incubate the eggs 24/7. So, we should have cygnets sometime around June 7th – June 10th! Wow! I’ll send pictures of the family after the new arrivals and will keep you posted on the progress. Sincerely, Ann Potter
